A visit to the Northwest Masonic Discussion page on Facebook is highly recommended to those with the luxury of time, some familiarity of the format, and the right machinery. For those who have none of the above, let this stand for a substitute! Recent conversations there, between Brothers from across our region, have covered the following topics: Whether UGLE is right to have participated in a documentary showing Blue Lodge degree work start to finish; whether one-day classes for Blue Lodge degrees in Ohio are a good idea; a call for papers from the Quator Coronati Conference; whether the use of technology (specifically, video-chatting over the internet) to practice degree work is a violation of secrecy; identifying vintage sterling Masonic calling-card cases as such; a brief history of anti-Masonry; and last, but not least, an open discussion of the meaning of “Temperance.” It is this last subject that inspired what follows here – a very brief look at Temperance as a Masonic Virtue. Greetings from the members and adults of Bethel #4. We have missed the deadline for the past few Trestleboards… but we want you to know we are alive and happy!

Friday nights are usually not the lodge’s meeting night, but the lodge made an exception this time to accommodate a special event: The raising of Brother Kent Smith to the sublime degree of Master Mason.
The evening wasn’t just about raising a brother; it was also about creating a family legacy where the fourth and final brother of the Smith family finally became a member of the fraternity. To mark this auspicious event, WB Alan Smith and Brother Daniel Smith — both from George W. Lininger Lodge No. 268 in Omaha, Nebraska — were in attendance. WB Alan also played an important role in the degree, practicing extensively to make sure that his part conformed to Oregon ritual requirements.
Brother Kent Smith follows Brother Daniel Smith in joining the Craft. The first of the Smith brothers who was initiated was WB Alan Smith, then followed by WB Stephen Smith.
Last Wednesday, September 21st, Friendship Masonic Lodge No. 160 conferred the Fellowcraft Degree on Brother Kent Smith. The degree was conferred by WB Bob Casey, the lodge’s current Worshipful Master, with brothers from various lodges in attendance.
Brother Christopher Chase, the lodge’s current Senior Deacon, delivered an exceptional rendition of the staircase lecture, while Brother Joey Piazza, visiting Senior Deacon from Kenton Lodge No. 145 delivered the G Lecture.
Last night, Mr. Kent Smith became known as Brother Entered Apprentice Kent Smith after going through Freemasonry’s Entered Apprentice Degree at Friendship Masonic Lodge No. 160. Brother Smith’s initiation marks a celebratory turning point in this year’s lodge leadership as the lodge looks forward to performing more degrees throughout the next few months of the year.
Many thanks to the brothers who witnessed the event!

I saw them tearing a building down, a group of men
in a busy town.
With a hefty blow and a lusty yell, They swung with zest, and the sidewall fell.
I asked the foremen, “are these men skilled? The kind you would hire, if you had to build?”
He looked at me, and laughed, “no, indeed! Unskilled labor is all I need. Why, they can wreck in a day or two, What has taken builders years to do.”
I asked myself, as I went my way, which of these roles have I tried to play?
Am I a builder with rule and square, measuring and constructing with skill and care?
Or am I the wrecker, who runs the town, content with the business of tearing down?
Attended a Leadership Workshop last month, conducted through Grand Lodge, and was a very well attended event. With the following subjects being discussed; Read More
