Friendship Masonic Lodge is staging a production of After the Storm

a Masonic Play by WB Richard Schanda

Last summer our Archive Committee made a number of fabulous discoveries, but the most intriguing was a script published by the Masonic Service Association titled, “After the Storm: a Masonic Play by WB Richard Schanda”.

Upon our first reading of the play we knew we had to produce it. There was little room left for new programming in the 2018 agenda, but our new Worshipful Master hasn’t forgotten this gem of a work. Under the Masonic and directorial leadership of Worshipful Brother Chris Chase Friendship Masonic Lodge is staging a traveling production of “After the Storm”

The Story

Written as a sequel to The Fight, and using many of the same characters; After the Storm takes place in a Lodge in Maine shortly after the end of the American Revolution.

The British loyalists who fled to Canada during the war return to their Mother Lodge, which was maintained by the American Revolutionaries who remained.

Both sides have sacrificed much for their respective beliefs, and they must find a way to bridge their divides as Brothers, and build the harmony that is the strength and support of all institutions.

Our Goals

We want to bring together as many Brothers from multiple area Lodges possible to participate in this production – for both the artistic and fundraising opportunities it presents.

While tickets will be gratis, donations will be accepted at performances. Proceeds from the show will be donated to the Portland Child Art Studio, an art studio in North Portland that promotes artistic education for children.

Performance Design and Dates

When performed, Masonic plays are a variant of the “theater in the round,” where the events of the play happen during or around an open Lodge meeting, and the audience sits in the gallery of a Lodge room like Brothers present for the meeting.

This feature obviously enhances the drama and powerful lessons contained within the work, and would be a fitting part of any Lodge’s programming.

The play will premier at our September Stated Meeting, and then travel to other Lodges for additional performances upon request.

Get Involved!

Like the healing the play exemplifies, this collaborative project can only succeed through the efforts of many brothers. Let us know how you’d like to support the show by emailing us through the form below.
